The DMA
program in Conducting (Wind Emphasis) is a highly select
degree program. One student is granted admission to the program at
time. It is intended for the experienced wind conductor who, upon
completion of the degree, is seeking employment as a university wind
ensemble conductor and/or Director of Bands. The DMA at Ohio State
University is a comprehensive degree that includes instruction and
performance requirements in wind ensemble/band, orchestral and choral
conducting as a matter of course.
Application Requirements
Application must be made to Ohio State University/School of Music
(click
here for application information). In addition to the university
application requirements, the student must submit a resume, a repertoire
list of works conducted, and a separate list of works studied but
not conducted. A videotape (VHS) or DVD of a recent rehearsal and
a recent performance is required. Submitting a recording of a performance
on your major instrument can also strengthen the application.
Auditions
A student’s application does not guarantee an on campus audition.
If a student is granted an audition, it will consist of conducting
the OSU Wind Symphony (repertoire to be determined on an individual
basis), and an interview with the Graduate Conducting Faculty.
Length of Program
This degree is a three-year program consisting of two years of course
work and performances, and one year to write the final document
and additional performances.
Funding
The DMA student will hold a three-year graduate assistantship that
consists of a tuition waiver and a stipend.
Responsibilities
Duties include conducting the Collegiate Winds, assisting and teaching
undergraduate conducting classes, and assisting the Director of
Bands. The DMA student guest conducts the Wind Symphony on a regular
basis and occasionally guest conducts the Symphonic Band and University
Band. Regular conducting opportunities and teaching experience
in the undergraduate conducting curriculum are important strengths
of the DMA at Ohio State.
